Our Founders
J.D. Smith – Co-Founder & Visionary
J.D. Smith began his oil and gas career in 2000, working frac completions in the Gulf of Mexico and abroad before moving into the Permian Basin as a landman in 2008. From 2010 to 2013, J.D. leased over 150,000 acres, generating more than $100 million in profit for a small investor group.
In 2014, he founded Wolfberry Mfg. in Stanton, TX, a tank manufacturing company using a welding process six times faster than traditional methods. That same year, he co-founded PetroLima, LLC, where he built and led its land, legal, and engineering teams. Under his leadership, the company secured over $450 million in private equity commitments. Today, J.D. leads PetroLima’s visionary strategy and long-term growth initiatives.
He also serves as president and founder of the John 4:14 Foundation, which has completed over 600 clean water projects in Eastern Uganda since 2010. J.D. and his wife Kara married in 2002 and live in Texas, raising three children.
Josh Lorenz – Co-Founder & Managing Partner
Josh Lorenz is a serial entrepreneur and experienced executive with a background in building businesses, raising capital, and structuring private equity deals. Before co-founding EnCore Permian, Josh launched PetroLima, LLC in 2014 to pursue undervalued assets in the energy sector. He leads the company’s acquisition strategy and capital relationships.
A former speaker at the New York Stock Exchange, Josh has been quoted by the Wall Street Journal, Houston Chronicle, and NPR. He also owns JetCEO, LLC, an aviation consulting firm, and is a commercially rated Airline Transport Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor.
Josh served as president of the John 4:14 Foundation for two years and is deeply committed to servant leadership. He holds a degree from DePauw University and lives in Clayton, Missouri with his wife and children.
